On Thursday, midwives, doctors, and pregnant women took to the streets of Buenos Aires with signs that read, "It's my right to choose how, where, and with whom I give birth," and, "Yes to births at home with midwives."
A 2012 report from the Argentine Health Ministry suggested that around 56 percent of births in Argentina took place in a public hospital. The ministry now says that in the past three years, the number of home births in Argentina has tripled as people try to avoid what they feel are unnecessary C-sections in hospital births. In response, the government plans to introduce legislation that would cap the number of home births per year.
