Prison inmate staged rooftop protest
Two lags who caused £10,000 of damage in a five-hour rooftop protest told a negotiator they did it because it was a nice day and they were sick of jail, a court heard. William Palmer and Jonathan Knox sunbathed and trashed felting, doors, windows and plumbing with a hammer lifted from a workshop. Palmer was demonstrating against his living condition, cuts to family visits and association time, a court heard.
The inmate claimed he only had mice in his cell for company, and "even a guard said it was not fit for a dog".
He claimed conditions in Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution, Co Durham meant he had to "air his grievances".
